How to Press DTF Transfers

April 13, 2025

How to Press DTF Transfers Correctly | Modfirst DTF Guide

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are one of the easiest and most effective ways to apply full-color designs onto garments—but only if pressed properly. At Modfirst DTF, we provide ready-to-press DTF gang sheets and single transfers that deliver crisp, long-lasting results. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned printer, knowing how to press DTF transfers the right way ensures top-notch quality, durability, and customer satisfaction.

What You Need to Press DTF Transfers

Before you begin, make sure you have:

✅ A Heat Press

  • Manual or auto heat press

  • Not recommended: household iron or Cricut EasyPress for professional results

✅ Your DTF Transfer

  • Custom gang sheet or single design from Modfirst DTF

✅ A Garment

  • Cotton, polyester, tri-blends, spandex, fleece, etc.

✅ Teflon Sheet or Parchment Paper

  • For optional post-press to lock in the print

Recommended Heat Press Settings for DTF Transfers

  • Temperature: 300°F – 320°F (150°C – 160°C)

  • Pressure: Medium to firm

  • Time: 10–15 seconds

Always refer to any specific instructions provided with your transfer sheet from Modfirst DTF.

Step-by-Step: How to Press DTF Transfers

1. Pre-Press Your Garment

Place the shirt (or other garment) on the heat press and pre-press for 5 seconds. This removes moisture and smooths wrinkles, ensuring better adhesion.

2. Position the DTF Transfer

Place the printed DTF film face up (design facing garment) in your desired location.

✅ Use heat-resistant tape for exact alignment if needed.

3. Press the Transfer

Close the heat press with the recommended settings:

  • Temp: 300°F to 320°F

  • Time: 10–15 seconds

  • Pressure: Medium to firm

4. Peel the Film

Depending on your transfer type:

  • Cold Peel: Wait for the garment to cool completely, then peel slowly

  • Hot Peel: Peel immediately after lifting the press

Modfirst DTF transfers are typically cold peel, but we provide label-specific instructions for every order.

5. Optional Post-Press (Highly Recommended)

Place a Teflon or parchment sheet over the design and press again for 5 seconds. This seals the transfer into the fibers and increases wash durability.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

🚫 Pressing with too little pressure
🚫 Not pre-pressing the garment
🚫 Peeling too early or too late (based on peel type)
🚫 Using a household iron instead of a heat press
🚫 Not aligning the print correctly

Care Instructions After Pressing

To extend the life of your DTF printed apparel:

  • Wash inside out

  • Use cold or warm water

  • Hang dry or use low heat tumble dry

  • Do not bleach

  • Avoid ironing directly on the print

Modfirst DTF transfers are designed to last 50+ washes with proper care.

Final Thoughts

Pressing DTF transfers is simple—but accuracy matters. By following the right heat settings and peel instructions, you’ll get professional-level results every time. At Modfirst DTF, we provide only high-quality, ready-to-press transfers to help your apparel shine, stretch, and sell with confidence.

Whether you’re pressing for a business, event, or personal project, our transfers make it easy to get stunning results.
