DTF printing (Direct-to-Film printing) is a revolutionary process that allows you to create full-color, high-resolution designs and transfer them onto nearly any type of fabric. At Modfirst DTF, we specialize in providing premium DTF transfers that are easy to use, stretch-resistant, and built to last. Whether you're a business owner, crafter, or clothing brand, understanding how DTF printing works will help you make the most of this cutting-edge technology.
DTF printing is a heat transfer process that uses specialized PET film, water-based pigment inks, and a hot melt powder adhesive to create designs that can be pressed onto garments with a heat press. The result is a durable, vibrant image that adheres to cotton, polyester, blends, and other fabrics with ease.
Start with a high-resolution image (preferably 300 DPI). Use design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or any tool that allows transparent backgrounds. Save your file in PNG format for the best results.
💡 Tip: Make sure your design is the exact size you want it printed.
A DTF printer prints the design in reverse on a PET film sheet using CMYK + White inks. The white layer serves as a base that helps the colors stay vibrant and stand out on dark or light fabrics.
While the printed ink is still wet, a fine-grain hot melt powder is sprinkled evenly across the design. The excess is shaken off, leaving a clean, powder-coated image.
This adhesive powder is what allows the transfer to permanently bond with the fabric.
The PET film is then cured using a heat press or curing oven. During this step, the powder melts and binds to the ink, creating a solid layer that’s ready for heat transfer.
Typical cure settings: 280–310°F for 2–4 minutes, depending on the method
Place the cured film face-down onto your garment and use a heat press to apply the design.
Temperature: 300–320°F
Time: 10–15 seconds
Pressure: Medium to firm
Let the garment cool slightly or completely (depending on your film type), then peel the film off to reveal the finished design.
Optional: Do a post-press for 5 seconds with a Teflon or parchment sheet to lock in the transfer.
